The reinterpretation was probably <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*af-ter</mentioned> → <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aft-er</mentioned>, after which a static locative form <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aft-ai</mentioned> was created to the newly reanalyzed stem, comparable in structure to <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_furai"><ref target="#pgmc_furai">*furai</ref></mentioned> (‘before, in front’) <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="66–86">Dunkel 2014: 66–86</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="3">Kroonen 2013: 3</bibl>. Gothic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_afta"><ref target="#cog_got_afta">𐌰𐍆𐍄𐌰</ref></mentioned> is the key direct reflex; it has often been treated as an error for <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_aftra"><ref target="#cog_got_aftra">𐌰𐍆𐍄𐍂𐌰</ref></mentioned>, but Lehmann <bibl corresp="#lehmann1986b" n="s.v. afta" ana="#omit-author">1986: s.v. afta</bibl> keeps it distinct because <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_aftra"><ref target="#cog_got_aftra">𐌰𐍆𐍄𐍂𐌰</ref></mentioned> does not normally mean simply ‘behind’. This is consistent with the static “where?” value of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aftai"><ref target="#pgmc_aftai">*aftai</ref></mentioned>, as opposed to the broader temporal/local range of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_after"><ref target="#pgmc_after">*after</ref></mentioned>.</seg>
