The first element is from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_agjo"><ref target="#pgmc_agjo">*agjō</ref></mentioned>, rather than <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_agaz"><ref target="#pgmc_agaz">*agaz</ref></mentioned>, since Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_ecg"><ref target="#cog_ang_ecg">eċġ</ref></mentioned> directly reflects <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_agjo"><ref target="#pgmc_agjo">*agjō</ref></mentioned>, whereas <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_agaz"><ref target="#pgmc_agaz">*agaz</ref></mentioned> lead to Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_ege"><ref target="#cog_ang_ege">eġe</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#bosworth2014" n="s.vv. ecg, þeów">Bosworth &amp; Toller 2014: s.vv. ecg, þeów</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="4">Kroonen 2013: 4</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="145–46">Ringe 2017: 145–46</bibl>. The second element,<mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_thewaz"><ref target="#pgmc_thewaz">*þewaz</ref></mentioned>, is secure within Germanic, but its deeper PIE derivation is debated. Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="541" ana="#omit-author">2013: 541</bibl> treats it as Germanic-only or at least without a fully secure PIE prehistory. </seg>
            <seg type="p">The Old English reflex appears to preserve a Continental Germanic heroic name: Shaw <bibl corresp="#shaw2020" n="26–29" ana="#omit-author">2020: 26–29</bibl> argues that its first element was common in Old English but not securely productive in Scandinavian naming, while the second element was not productive in Old English names; both elements, however, are well represented in Continental Germanic onomastics. Shaw also compares the Scandinavian cognate <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Eggþér</mentioned>, found in the Vǫluspá edda and in Saxo’s writings, suggesting that the name may have been associated with a heroic single-combat figure before being reinterpreted in Scandinavian mythic contexts.</seg>
