In Proto-Germanic this was preserved as a neuter <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">z</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ahaz ~ *ahiz-</mentioned>, later partly remodeled, possibly as <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ahsą</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2022" n="7">Kroonen et al. 2022: 7</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="310">Ringe 2017: 310</bibl>. Cognate with Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_acus_x2"><ref target="#cog_lat_acus_x2">acus</ref></mentioned> &lt; Proto-Italic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*akos-</mentioned>, Tocharian A <mentioned xml:lang="xto" target="#cog_xto_ak"><ref target="#cog_xto_ak">āk</ref></mentioned>, and Tocharian B <mentioned xml:lang="txb" target="#cog_txb_ake"><ref target="#cog_txb_ake">āke</ref></mentioned>, which likely preserve the more primary sense ‘tip, point’. A possible Greek comparandum is Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_akoste"><ref target="#cog_grc_akoste">ἀκοστή</ref></mentioned>, though some Greek ‘chaff’ terms in this semantic field are less secure <bibl corresp="#wodtko2008" n="289">Wodtko et al. 2008: 289</bibl>. The agricultural sense ‘ear/awn/husk of grain’ is probably secondary after the Tocharian split, rather than directly reconstructible as the original PIE meaning <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="24">de Vaan 2008: 24</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2022" n="7">Kroonen et al. 2022: 7</bibl>. Compare also the related <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-derivative <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_ahano"><ref target="#pgmc_ahano">*ahanō</ref></mentioned> and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_agna"><ref target="#cog_lat_agna">agna</ref></mentioned>, from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂eḱ-on-eh₂-</mentioned>, where the same semantic development from ‘sharp object’ to ‘awn/chaff/ear’ is visible <bibl corresp="#kroonen2022" n="13">Kroonen et al. 2022: 13</bibl>, though de Vaan <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="23–24" ana="#omit-author">2008: 23–24</bibl> also notes that Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_agna"><ref target="#cog_lat_agna">agna</ref></mentioned> may alternatively be a Mediterranean loan.</seg>
