The Proto-Germanic form is secondary. Ringe’s <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="230–31" ana="#omit-author">2017: 230–31</bibl> account, based on <bibl corresp="#szemerenyi1960" n="34–35">Szemerényi 1960: 34–35</bibl>, says that earlier<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> **-ēhund- </mentioned>arose in pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*fimfēhund-</mentioned> (‘fifty’), with the original <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ē</mentioned>- of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*fimfē</mentioned> (‘five’) later reanalyzed as a linking vowel, which then spread to <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*sehsēhund-</mentioned> (‘sixty’) and then <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*sebunt-ēhund- </mentioned>(‘seventy’), which was later reanalyzed after the loss of final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-t</mentioned> in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_sebun"><ref target="#pgmc_sebun">*sebun</ref></mentioned>, as *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*sebun-tēhund-</mentioned>. This newly abstracted ‘decad’ suffix *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tēhund-</mentioned> then spread analogically to ‘eighty’ and ‘ninety’, yielding <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ahtōu-tēhundą </mentioned>and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*newun-tēhundą</mentioned>, respectively. Subsequently, the forms for ‘twenty’ through ‘sixty’ were replaced with periphrastic forms including <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*tigiwiz</mentioned>, plural of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_teguz"><ref target="#pgmc_teguz">*teguz</ref></mentioned> (a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">u</mentioned>-stem derivation possibly reflecting a zero-grade collective or abstract noun) &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_tehun"><ref target="#pgmc_tehun">*tehun</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#neri2003" n="180–83">Neri 2003: 180–83</bibl>, leading to the common forms seen in the Proto-West Germanic reflexes today, such as English -ty, Dutch<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> -tig</mentioned>, West Frisian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-tich</mentioned>, and German <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-zig</mentioned>, as well as in many of the decad reflexes of Old Norse.</seg>
