The deeper status of the etymon is debated: it is a strong Germanic–Italic isogloss, but its limited distribution has led Beekes <bibl corresp="#beekes1998" n="459–61" ana="#omit-author">1998: 459–61</bibl> to treat it as an Old European hydronymic substrate word rather than as an inherited Proto-Indo-European word; Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="7" ana="#omit-author">2013: 7</bibl> instead keeps the inherited analysis and connects it more broadly with the <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ep"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ep">*h₂ep-</ref></mentioned> river/water complex.</seg>
            <seg type="p">Prósper <bibl corresp="#prosper2002" n="396–97" ana="#omit-author">2002: 396–97</bibl> provides interesting evidence for an alternative etymon in citing several deity names and epithets associated with water, attributed to Lusitanian (e.g., <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">AGVAECO</mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">AQVILIANICO</mentioned>, and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">AQVITIBVS</mentioned>). She notes that PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kʷ</mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kw </mentioned>did not merge in Lusitanian: PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kʷ</mentioned> became Lusitanian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*p</mentioned> (similar to P-Celtic and some Italic dialects) but PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kw</mentioned> remained as Lusitanian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kw</mentioned> (or possibly <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*gw</mentioned>) (see also <bibl corresp="#witczak2005" n="274–76">Witczak 2005: 274–76</bibl>). As a result, she posits the etymon without a labiovelar consonant, and instead with a consonant cluster, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*kw</mentioned>, thus <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ék-w-eh₂.</mentioned> This derivation coincides with Garnier’s <bibl corresp="#garnier2012" ana="#omit-author">2012</bibl> theory, based on <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ek_u"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ek_u">*h₂éḱ-u-</ref></mentioned>, comparing Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_aqua"><ref target="#cog_lat_aqua">aqua</ref></mentioned> and the “swift” word-family reflected by Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_okus"><ref target="#cog_grc_okus">ὠκύς</ref></mentioned>, Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_asu"><ref target="#cog_san_asu">आशु</ref></mentioned>, and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_ocior"><ref target="#cog_lat_ocior">ōcior</ref></mentioned>. This analysis is semantically attractive for Germanic, where <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ahwō</mentioned> primarily denotes a river or stream, but the wider Indo-European connection remains uncertain, especially since the laryngeals of the “swift” adjective are disputed. </seg>
