The exact formation is uncertain. <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="9">Kroonen 2013: 9</bibl> tentatively reconstructs an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*nt-</mentioned>formation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂eyḱ-ént</mentioned>, which would phonologically account well for a dental stem <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aiginþ-</mentioned>, but a regular athematic active participle would be expected to have a zero-grade root and the suffixal alternation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ónt- ~ -n̥t-</mentioned>. The Germanic evidence does not securely establish a paradigm <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aigin ~ *aiginþ-</mentioned>: Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_eigin"><ref target="#cog_non_eigin">eigin</ref></mentioned> lacks the dental, while dental forms in Norwegian and Swedish may reflect a secondary derivative <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">**aigindja-</mentioned>. An early split between a direct form without a dental and an oblique dental stem is possible, but speculative.
