Probably related to *aikaną and *aiganą, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyḱ-; compare Sanskrit ईष्टे and Tocharian B aik- as root cognates Kroonen 2013: 9 Mallory & Adams 1997: 270 Watkins 2011: s.v. aik-. The verb probably arose as a weak class 2 derivative of a lost Germanic nominal or adjectival base **aihtra-Orel 2003: 6–7, or perhaps **aihtraz, though the formation of that base is unclear. No secure cognates are known.
