The most common comparanda include Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_aigilops"><ref target="#cog_grc_aigilops">αἰγίλωψ</ref></mentioned> and possibly Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_aesculus"><ref target="#cog_lat_aesculus">aesculus</ref></mentioned>, but de Vaan <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="28" ana="#omit-author">2008: 28</bibl> maintains that the suffix in Latin is not clear and that it may have a substrate origin. Recent research on Greek αἰγίλωψ derives its plant senses internally from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_aix"><ref target="#cog_grc_aix">αἴξ</ref></mentioned>→ <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_aigilos"><ref target="#cog_grc_aigilos">αἴγῐλος</ref></mentioned> → αἰγίλωψ, thus it is less likely to be an inherited cognate <bibl corresp="#parkhaeva2024">Parkhaeva 2024</bibl>. Mallory and Adams <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="407" ana="#omit-author">1997: 407</bibl> believe that <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂eyǵ-</mentioned> was a species-specific term or a term that only existed as a western/central dialect term. Since there are no formally identical Indo-European cognates for <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aiks</mentioned>, it is possible that it comes from a non-Indo-European substrate. Kroonen's <bibl corresp="#kroonen2012b" n="242–43" ana="#omit-author">2012b: 242–43</bibl> argument, that root-noun inflection in Germanic can be a substrate marker, fits particularly well for this instance of a local plant name.</seg>
