            <seg type="p">The older analysis as a compound of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aiks"><ref target="#pgmc_aiks">*aiks</ref></mentioned> (‘oak’) + *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*wernô </mentioned>(‘squirrel, small, furred animal’) is semantically attractive and probably influenced later forms such as Old High German <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_goh_eihhurno_eihhorno"><ref target="#cog_goh_eihhurno_eihhorno">eihhurno/eihhorno</ref></mentioned>and German <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_de_eichhornchen"><ref target="#cog_de_eichhornchen">Eichhörnchen</ref></mentioned>, but it does not explain the North Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ī-/*i-</mentioned> variants or the internal ablaut. It is likely a secondary folk etymology.
