She posits an old compound as a protoform: <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*Hoyno-gʷ(h₂)o-</mentioned> meaning ‘going alone’, maintaining that “Germanic -k- is not an established suﬃx” <bibl corresp="#ref1989" n="s.v. einka-">Magnússon 1989: s.v. einka-</bibl> <bibl corresp="#whitehead2021" n="151–52">Whitehead et al. 2021: 151–52</bibl>. In either case, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_no_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_no_s">*h₁óy-no-s</ref></mentioned>.
