Orel's <bibl corresp="#orel2003" n="s.v. *airaz" ana="#omit-author">2003: s.v. *airaz</bibl> derivation from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_airi"><ref target="#pgmc_airi">*airi</ref></mentioned> leaves both the derivational morphology and the semantic development unexplained. It may continue a substantivized verbal adjective <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey_ru_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey_ru_s">*h₁ey-ru-s</ref></mentioned>, from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey">*h₁ey-</ref></mentioned>, with the semantic development ‘traveler’ → ‘emissary, messenger’ <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="80">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 80</bibl> <bibl corresp="#wood1898" n="82">Wood 1898: 82</bibl>. Mees <bibl corresp="#mees2022" n="288 n. 3" ana="#omit-author">2022a: 288 n. 3</bibl> instead connects <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*airuz</mentioned> with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_arundija"><ref target="#pgmc_arundija">*arundiją</ref></mentioned> and proposes that both were formed from a verbal base ultimately related to Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_oro"><ref target="#cog_lat_oro">ōrō</ref></mentioned>, borrowed through Gaulish <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ār-</mentioned>. This interpretation is semantically attractive but remains speculative, since the Gaulish intermediate is unattested and the development of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ār-</mentioned> to the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*air-</mentioned> of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*airuz</mentioned> would have to be analogical.</seg>
