Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂eydʰ-s-éh₂</mentioned>, an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-s-</mentioned> extension from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eydh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eydh">*h₂eydʰ-</ref></mentioned>, and thus related to Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aidaz"><ref target="#pgmc_aidaz">*aidaz</ref></mentioned>; however, this derivation requires loss of the root-final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*dʰ</mentioned> before <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*s</mentioned>, but the precise morphological and phonological development is unclear <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="14">Kroonen 2013: 14</bibl> <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="259">Rix et al. 2001: 259</bibl>. A phonologically more direct preform would be <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ey-s-éh₂</mentioned>, presupposing a simpler root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey">*h₂ey-</ref></mentioned>, but the independent reconstruction of this root is uncertain and may instead reflect secondary analysis of formations traditionally assigned to <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eydh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eydh">*h₂eydʰ-</ref></mentioned> (this root itself has been analyzed as perhaps an old compound or enlarged verbal root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey_dhh1"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey_dhh1">*h₂ey-dʰh₁-</ref></mentioned>, from a putative  <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ey">*h₂ey-</ref></mentioned>+ <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_dheh1"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_dheh1">dʰeh₁-</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#thorso2023" n="108">Thorsø et al. 2023: 108</bibl>).</seg>
