Its two meanings reflect the ordinary intransitive/transitive range of such a formation: ‘to produce or discharge pus, become suppurating’ and ‘to affect with poison’. The base <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aitra"><ref target="#pgmc_aitra">*aitrą</ref></mentioned> is generally reconstructed as PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂óyd-ro-m</mentioned>, an o-grade derivative of root <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂eyd-</mentioned> (‘to swell’).
