Since no secure non-Germanic cognate directly continues <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2oys_eh2_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2oys_eh2_x2">*h₂oys-éh₂-</ref></mentioned>, the deeper PIE analysis remains uncertain. The Germanic meanings ‘honor, reverence’, ‘favor, mercy’, ‘help, protection’, and ‘gift, reward’ are developments of a broad sense ‘respectful or benevolent treatment’ <bibl corresp="#must1961" n="326–28">Must 1961: 326–28</bibl>. A possible early inscription of the word in the form of Latin “<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Alaisiagae</mentioned>” comes from 3rd century CE inscriptions at a shrine in Housesteads in Northumbria, England, presumably built by Frisians. The German philologist Wilhem Scherer (1841–1886) considered the word to be made up of Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">**al-</mentioned> (&lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_allaz"><ref target="#pgmc_allaz">*allaz</ref></mentioned>, ‘all’) and <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">**ais-</mentioned> &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aizo"><ref target="#pgmc_aizo">*aizō</ref></mentioned> (‘reverence, respect, honor’) <bibl corresp="#mees2023b" n="128–36">Mees 2023b: 128–36</bibl>.</seg>
