            <seg type="p">The first constituent<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aithaz"><ref target="#pgmc_aithaz">*aiþaz</ref></mentioned> continues Celto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*oito-s</mentioned> (‘oath’), traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_to_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_to_s">*h₁óy-to-s</ref></mentioned>, from root  <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey">*h₁ey-</ref></mentioned>, though both the PIE derivation and the possibility of early Celtic borrowing remain uncertain.
