The formation is traditionally derived as Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_to_s"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1oy_to_s">*h₁óy-to-s</ref></mentioned>, an o-grade <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-to-</mentioned> noun from root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey">*h₁ey-</ref></mentioned>, perhaps originally ‘a going, course’; compare the morphologically parallel Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_oitos"><ref target="#cog_grc_oitos">οἶτος</ref></mentioned>, possibly from an earlier meaning of ‘course’ <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="408–409">Mallory &amp; Adams 1997: 408–409</bibl> <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="219">van Sluis et al. 2023: 219</bibl>. Under this interpretation, ‘course, going’ developed specifically into ‘oath’ in Celtic and Germanic, perhaps through an oath-taking rite involving ceremonial movement, although that cultural explanation is speculative. Mallory and Adams <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="408–409" ana="#omit-author">1997: 408–409</bibl> suggest that oath-takers would walk or “go” between parts of slaughtered animals to give force to an oath.</seg>
            <seg type="p">The ultimate history remains uncertain. The identical Celtic and Germanic forms may represent a shared post-Proto-Indo-European innovation, but early borrowing from Celtic into Germanic is also possible; the preservation of a more concrete meaning in the parallel Germanic formation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_aidija"><ref target="#pgmc_aidija">*aidiją</ref></mentioned> may favor an originally Celtic semantic development ‘course, going’ &gt; ‘oath’ followed by borrowing into Germanic <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="328">Ringe 2017: 328</bibl> <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="219">van Sluis et al. 2023: 219</bibl>.</seg>
