Hansen <bibl corresp="#hansen2017" n="209–11" ana="#omit-author">2017a: 209–11</bibl> reconstructs a Proto-Indo-European formation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁óy-ti-h₃n(h₂)-</mentioned> (‘the one endowed or charged with an oath’), a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ti</mentioned>-stem from an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">o</mentioned>-grade form of root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1ey">*h₁ey-</ref></mentioned>, with the Hoffmann suffix (creates nouns and adjectives meaning ‘one who possesses, is characterized by, or is associated with X’), though the precise suffixal analysis remains uncertain. The semantic development is supported by Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_aew"><ref target="#cog_ang_aew">æw</ref></mentioned> and its adjectival use in the sense ‘lawful, legitimate’ <bibl corresp="#hansen2017" n="209–11">Hansen 2017a: 209–11</bibl> <bibl corresp="#mezger1959">Mezger 1959</bibl> <bibl corresp="#milanova2020" n="85">Milanova 2020: 85</bibl>. The traditional interpretation as a nursery formation is unlikely; unlike genuine Germanic nursery words such as <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_atto"><ref target="#pgmc_atto">*attô</ref></mentioned> and<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_ammo"><ref target="#pgmc_ammo">*ammǭ</ref></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aiþį̄</mentioned> lacks the characteristic phonological structure of child-directed formations <bibl corresp="#hansen2017" n="210">Hansen 2017a: 210</bibl> <bibl corresp="#hansen2018" n="176–79, 181">Hansen 2018: 176–79, 181</bibl>.
