Zair <bibl corresp="#zair2011" ana="#omit-author">2011</bibl> derives it specifically from the strong stem of an acrostatic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2owi_h2ewi"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2owi_h2ewi">*h₂ówi- ~ *h₂éwi-</ref></mentioned>, whereas other reconstructions treat the base as a proterokinetic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ewi_h2w_ey"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ewi_h2w_ey">*h₂éwi- ~ *h₂w-éy-</ref></mentioned>. The derivative may originally have meant ‘belonging to a bird; a bird’s’, perhaps modifying an otherwise lost noun for ‘egg’, before becoming substantivized; the derivation has nevertheless been questioned because <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">vṛddhi </mentioned>formations more commonly appear to be based on weak stems <bibl corresp="#schindler1969">Schindler 1969</bibl> <bibl corresp="#zair2011">Zair 2011</bibl>.</seg>
            <seg type="p">The Germanic form developed approximately as follows: loss of initial laryngeal, monophthongization of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ōw</mentioned> &gt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ō</mentioned>  (Mahlow’s law), shortening of the pretonic long vowel (Dybo’s law), and  the development of a geminate glide sequence, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-jj- </mentioned>(Holtzmann’s law): <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ōwyóm</mentioned> &gt; pre-Germanic *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ōwyóm </mentioned>&gt; Early Germanic *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*oijon </mentioned>&gt; Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ajją</mentioned>.
