Compare Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_axine"><ref target="#cog_grc_axine">ἀξῑ́νη</ref></mentioned> &lt; Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂egʷs-i-</mentioned> and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ascia"><ref target="#cog_lat_ascia">ascia</ref></mentioned> &lt; PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂esk-ieh₂-</mentioned>, with both exhibiting differences in the root consonants and suffixation compared to Proto-Germanic. The word is therefore likely a prehistoric <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Wanderwort </mentioned>or loan from an unidentified non-Indo-European language rather than an inherited PIE lexeme.
