Old Norse continued the weak stem variant, while West Germanic continued the<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> a</mentioned>-stem variant. According to Carr, there is some doubt as to whether it was a Proto-Germanic word or independently created in the daughter languages. Its use preceded Christianity in Old Norse, with the strong<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> a</mentioned>-stem being a possible original PGmc form. Its religious use in both Old Norse and West Germanic was likely a calque of Latin <mentioned xml:lang="lat" target="#cog_lat_omnipotens_x2"><ref target="#cog_lat_omnipotens_x2">omnipotens</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#carr1939" n="57">Carr 1939: 57</bibl>. Closely related is the Gothic term <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_allwaldands"><ref target="#cog_got_allwaldands">𐌰𐌻𐌻𐍅𐌰𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍃</ref></mentioned>, based on a substantivized participle of a Gothic reflex of PGmc <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_waldana"><ref target="#pgmc_waldana">*waldaną</ref></mentioned>. Lehmann assumes the word is a calque of Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="grc" target="#cog_grc_pantokrator"><ref target="#cog_grc_pantokrator">πᾰντοκρᾰ́τωρ</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#lehmann1986b" n="29">Lehmann 1986b: 29</bibl>.</seg>
