Mallory and Adams <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="37" ana="#omit-author">1997: 37</bibl> give the more general reconstruction <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*hₓólehₐ-</mentioned> (‘awl’, in standard laryngeal notation: <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*Hóleh₂-</mentioned>). However, I believe an analysis of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alaz</mentioned> as an inherited instrument noun <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁oh₁-tló</mentioned> is formally and semantically attractive in light of Kroonen’s account of Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-l-</mentioned> from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-tl-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰl-</mentioned><bibl corresp="#kroonen2017">Kroonen 2017</bibl>. It competes with the conventional reconstruction with the root itself ending in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-l-</mentioned>, but that analysis is not based on an independently established root; rather, it reflects the traditional segmentation of Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="san" target="#cog_san_ara"><ref target="#cog_san_ara">आरा</ref></mentioned> and the PGmc forms. The relation of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto" target="#pgmc_elo"><ref target="#pgmc_elo">*ēlō</ref></mentioned> could then involve a parallel feminine instrument formation, perhaps <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁éh₁-tléh₂-</mentioned>, though the precise vocalism and PGmc consonant development would still require explanation, and this could sever the relationship with the Sanskrit noun as a direct cognate. Liberman <bibl corresp="#liberman2020" ana="#omit-author">2020</bibl> contends that the length of the root vowel in PGmc is essentially unknown and considers the word a likely <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Wanderwort</mentioned>.</seg>
