The reconstruction of an initial laryngeal is uncertain: <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂elbʰós</mentioned> has traditionally been reconstructed, while <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₄elbʰós</mentioned> was proposed partly to accommodate Hittite<mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_al_pa_as_alpas"><ref target="#cog_hit_al_pa_as_alpas">𒀠𒉺𒀸</ref></mentioned>; alternatively, the Hittite word may reflect o-grade <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂olbʰ-ó-s</mentioned>, so the Hittite evidence does not require <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₄ </mentioned><bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="s.v. albus">de Vaan 2008: s.v. albus</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kloekhorst2008" n="169">Kloekhorst 2008: 169</bibl> <bibl corresp="#woodhouse2012" n="226–27">Woodhouse 2012: 226–27</bibl>.
