The derivation from ‘white’ remains uncertain, however. Bichlmeier <bibl corresp="#bichlmeier2015" ana="#omit-author">2015</bibl> alternatively proposes a possible derivation of the base from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2elh2_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2elh2_x2">*h₂elh₂-</ref></mentioned> with a suffixal element <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-bʰ-</mentioned> (&lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-bʰh₂-o-</mentioned>, &lt; PIE root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_bheh2_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_bheh2_x2">*bʰeh₂-</ref></mentioned>) and interprets the name as ‘the meandering one’, an analysis compatible with the Elbe’s original course.</seg>
