            <seg type="p">From Proto-Indo-European *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">h₂el-tró-m</mentioned>, an instrumental noun in <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tro_m"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_tro_m">*-tro-m</ref></mentioned> formed from the root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2el_x3"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2el_x3">*h₂el-</ref></mentioned>, probably originally referring to that connected with or resulting from growth and subsequently developing the Proto-Germanic meaning ‘life, lifetime; age’. A closely corresponding formation occurs in Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_altro"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_altro">*altro-</ref></mentioned>, preserved in Old Irish <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sga_com_altar"><ref target="#cog_sga_com_altar">com-altar</ref></mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sga_mi_altar"><ref target="#cog_sga_mi_altar">mí-altar</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="s.v. *aldra-">Kroonen 2013: s.v. *aldra-</bibl> <bibl corresp="#olsen1988" n="8">Olsen 1988: 8</bibl> <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="238">van Sluis et al. 2023: 238</bibl>. However, the Celtic formation retains the root's ‘nourish, raise’ semantics, whereas the PGmc semantics differ; van Sluis and colleagues therefore regard the Celtic and Germanic nouns as <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">independent parallel formations</mentioned>, not evidence for a specifically Celto-Germanic word.
