Cognate with Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_alkas_x2"><ref target="#cog_lit_alkas_x2">al̃kas</ref></mentioned> and Latvian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lav_elks"><ref target="#cog_lav_elks">elks</ref></mentioned>, together pointing to a Baltic-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alk- </mentioned>denoting a sacred or protected place. Its deeper origin is disputed. The same root is reflected in Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_alexo"><ref target="#cog_grc_alexo">ἀλέξω</ref></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_alke"><ref target="#cog_grc_alke">ἀλκή</ref></mentioned>, and Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_raksati"><ref target="#cog_san_raksati">रक्षति</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#ref1997" n="458">Mallory &amp; Adams 1997: 458</bibl> <bibl corresp="#pokorny1959" n="32">Pokorny 1959: 32</bibl> <bibl corresp="#sorgo2020" n="432">Šorgo 2020: 432</bibl>. Mallory and Adams specifically interpret the Germanic ‘temple’ word as originally a ‘protected place’, connecting the Germanic and Baltic sacred-place terms with the PIE verb ‘protect’.</seg>
            <seg type="p">Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="s.v. *alh-" ana="#omit-author">2013: s.v. *alh-</bibl> instead reconstructs a non-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alk-</mentioned> and regards the connection with <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2lek"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2lek">*h₂lek-</ref></mentioned> as arbitrary. Because the word is confined essentially to Baltic and Germanic and shows archaic root-noun inflection in Germanic, he suggests that it may have been borrowed independently into both branches from a local European substrate. Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="116" ana="#omit-author">2017: 116</bibl> likewise avoids assigning the noun itself directly to PIE, deriving Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alh-</mentioned> from *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">post-PIE alk- (‘sacred place’)</mentioned> and comparing Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_alkas_x2"><ref target="#cog_lit_alkas_x2">al̃kas</ref></mentioned>. Derksen <bibl corresp="#derksen2015" n="49–50, s.v. alkas" ana="#omit-author">2015: 49–50, s.v. alkas</bibl> similarly regards substrate origin as possible for the Baltic forms. Most recently, however, Šorgo <bibl corresp="#sorgo2020" n="432" ana="#omit-author">2020: 432</bibl> argues that neither the limited Baltic-Germanic distribution nor the root inflection requires substrate origin. He judges derivation from <mentioned xml:lang="ine-x-proto" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2lek"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2lek">*h₂lek-</ref></mentioned> as preferable.</seg>
