            <seg type="p">The closest formal cognate may be Oscan <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_xum_allo"><ref target="#cog_xum_allo">allo</ref></mentioned>, possibly from Proto-Italic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alnos</mentioned>&lt; PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂el-no-</mentioned>, in which case it would support both the root and the nasal suffix. However, its exact formation is disputed; a direct derivation from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂el-no-</mentioned> is phonologically problematic according to Untermann <bibl corresp="#untermann2000" n="81" ana="#omit-author">2000: 81</bibl> (following <bibl corresp="#meiser1986" n="164–68">Meiser 1986: 164–68</bibl>) because inherited <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ln-</mentioned> would be expected to yield Oscan <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-nn-</mentioned> rather than <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ll-,</mentioned> though Savić <bibl corresp="#savic2019" ana="#omit-author">2019</bibl> disputes this.
