Bjorvand <bibl corresp="#bjorvand2007" ana="#omit-author">2007</bibl> derives Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alú-þ-</mentioned> from earlier <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*olú-t-</mentioned>, and connects <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alu-</mentioned> with Vedic Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sa-x-vedic_arusa"><ref target="#cog_sa-x-vedic_arusa">अ॒रु॒ष</ref></mentioned>, Avestan <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ave_aurusa"><ref target="#cog_ave_aurusa">𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬱𐬀</ref></mentioned>, and Old High German <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_goh_elo"><ref target="#cog_goh_elo">elo</ref></mentioned>, hence originally ‘golden/pale beverage’. Possible inherited cognates include Old Armenian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_xcl_awli"><ref target="#cog_xcl_awli">աւղի</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#olsen1999" n="443">Olsen 1999: 443</bibl> and Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_alus"><ref target="#cog_lit_alus">alùs</ref></mentioned>. Derksen <bibl corresp="#derksen2015" n="s.v. alus" ana="#omit-author">2015: s.v. alus</bibl> notes that the Baltic and Slavic forms may be borrowings from Germanic, but Jakob <bibl corresp="#jakob2024" n="41" ana="#omit-author">2024: 41</bibl> specifically rejects the widespread analysis of the latter as a Germanic loan, since a donor <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aluþ-</mentioned> should have preserved some trace of the stem-final dental. Proto-Finnic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_fiu-x-proto_olut"><ref target="#cog_fiu-x-proto_olut">*olut</ref></mentioned>, by contrast, is most plausibly derived from late Proto-Scandinavian <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">**ǫluþ-</mentioned>, after<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *a</mentioned> had been rounded but before loss of the second syllable, providing strong evidence for the dental stem at that stage <bibl corresp="#ref2020" n="s.v. olut">Junttila et al. 2020–: s.v. olut</bibl>. Ossetian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_oss_aeluton"><ref target="#cog_oss_aeluton">ӕлутон</ref></mentioned> has been treated as a Germanic loan by Kroonen but as an inherited cognate by Bjorvand <bibl corresp="#bjorvand2007">Bjorvand 2007</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="23–24">Kroonen 2013: 23–24</bibl>. Alternatively, the European beer words may belong with Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_alumen"><ref target="#cog_lat_alumen">alūmen</ref></mentioned> through <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*alu-</mentioned> ‘bitter substance’, perhaps ultimately from a European substrate <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="36">de Vaan 2008: 36</bibl>. </seg>
