The underlying noun was an ablauting body-part <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem, reconstructed by Pronk <bibl corresp="#pronk2015" n="333–34" ana="#omit-author">2015: 333–34</bibl>  as <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₃eh₁-l-n- ~ *h₃h₁-el-n-</mentioned>, probably originally with singulative function; it belongs to the conventionally reconstructed root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_heh3l"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_heh3l">*Heh₃l-</ref></mentioned>, though the precise laryngeals are uncertain <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="638">de Vaan 2008: 638</bibl>.
