The Celtic word is a <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_to">*-tó-</ref></mentioned> participial formation, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2mbhi_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2mbhi_x2">*h₂m̥bʰí</ref></mentioned>  + <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eg"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eg">*h₂eǵ-</ref></mentioned>, with the original sense ‘one sent around’, hence ‘one acting on behalf of a superior’ <bibl corresp="#koch2020" n="114">Koch 2020: 114</bibl> <bibl corresp="#matasovic2009" n="32">Matasović 2009a: 32</bibl>. Hispano-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Ambatus</mentioned> probably belongs to the same formation despite uncertainty over the Celtiberian treatment of earlier <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-kt-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-xt- </mentioned><bibl corresp="#ngomo_fernandez2025" n="126–27">Ngomo Fernández 2025: 126–27</bibl>. The borrowing may predate or postdate the major Proto-Germanic consonant shifts, since its consonants are not chronologically diagnostic; a later borrowing is considered more likely, while its pan-Germanic distribution requires borrowing before the breakup of Proto-Germanic <bibl corresp="#koch2020" n="38, 47, 80">Koch 2020: 38, 47, 80</bibl> <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="204">van Sluis et al. 2023: 204</bibl>. Note that Gothic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_andbahts"><ref target="#cog_got_andbahts">𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐍃</ref></mentioned> exhibits folk-etymological remodeling based on native 𐌰𐌽𐌳- (<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">and-</mentioned>), accounting for the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-nd-</mentioned> instead of the expected <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-mb-</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kieckers1960" n="229">Kieckers 1960: 229</bibl> <bibl corresp="#lehmann1986a" n="36">Lehmann 1986a: 36</bibl>.</seg>
