The closest cognate is Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_umbo"><ref target="#cog_lat_umbo">umbō</ref></mentioned>, which continues the same <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem; compare also Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_omphalos"><ref target="#cog_grc_omphalos">ὀμφαλός</ref></mentioned>, Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_nabhi"><ref target="#cog_san_nabhi">नाभि</ref></mentioned>, and Old Prussian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_prg_nabis"><ref target="#cog_prg_nabis">nabis</ref></mentioned> from the same root. The root also underlies <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_nabo"><ref target="#pgmc_nabo">*nabō</ref></mentioned> ( &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₃nobʰ-eh₂</mentioned>) and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_nabalo"><ref target="#pgmc_nabalo">*nabalô</ref></mentioned>, both from o-grade versions of the same PIE root <bibl corresp="#lubotsky2023" n="257">Lubotsky 2023: 257</bibl>.</seg>
            <seg type="p">The PIE-level <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Schwebeablaut</mentioned> analysis is not certain: Ozoliņš <bibl corresp="#ozolins2015" n="79–83" ana="#omit-author">2015: 79–83</bibl> argues that the association of Old Saxon <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_osx_ambon"><ref target="#cog_osx_ambon">ambon</ref></mentioned> with the <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h3nebh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h3nebh">*h₃nebʰ-</ref></mentioned> family is itself not beyond doubt and that, if the etymology is accepted, the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">amb-</mentioned> shape could instead reflect Germanic analogical remodeling of an inherited ablauting <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem. He nevertheless regards Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_umbo"><ref target="#cog_lat_umbo">umbō</ref></mentioned> as the preferable direct comparison and notes that the semantic development ‘navel’ &gt; ‘belly, abdomen’ is straightforward.</seg>
