The Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-p-</mentioned> is secondary: pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-mr-</mentioned> developed an epenthetic homorganic stop, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-mr- </mentioned>&gt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-mbr-</mentioned>, before Grimm’s Law, yielding <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ampra-</mentioned>. Although such nasal-stop epenthesis is phonetically well motivated, clear Germanic parallels for its specifically pre-Germanic chronology are lacking <bibl corresp="#heidermanns1993" n="99–100">Heidermanns 1993: 99–100</bibl> <bibl corresp="#lloyd1988" n="s.v. ampfara">Lloyd &amp; Springer 1988: s.v. ampfara</bibl> <bibl corresp="#wodtko2008" n="202–204">Wodtko et al. 2008: 202–204</bibl>.
