            <seg type="p">From the Proto-Indo-European local particle <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2en_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2en_x2">*h₂en-</ref></mentioned>, probably through an extended local/allative adverb <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂en-o ~ *h₂en-ó</mentioned>, though the exact formation underlying Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*an ~ *ana</mentioned> is disputed. Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="26" ana="#omit-author">2013: 26</bibl> derives Proto-Germanic<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> @ana*ana</mentioned> from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂en-h̥₂</mentioned>, with vocalization of final <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h̥₂</mentioned> to <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*a</mentioned>; the resulting vowel was subsequently lost in simplex forms in individual Germanic languages but preserved in compounds and sometimes analogically restored. On the other hand, Dunkel <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="50–54" ana="#omit-author">2014: 50–54</bibl> reconstructs *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">áno</mentioned>, without the initial laryngeal, and van Beek <bibl corresp="#van_beek2018" n="47 n. 33" ana="#omit-author">2018: 47 n. 33</bibl> considers <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂en-o</mentioned> possible. Compare Proto-Indo-Iranian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_iir-x-proto_hana"><ref target="#cog_iir-x-proto_hana">*Haná</ref></mentioned>, continued by Avestan <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ave_ana"><ref target="#cog_ave_ana">𐬀𐬥𐬀</ref></mentioned>, as well as Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ana_x2"><ref target="#cog_grc_ana_x2">ἀνά</ref></mentioned>  and Proto-Italic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_itc-x-proto_ana_x2"><ref target="#cog_itc-x-proto_ana_x2">*ana</ref></mentioned>, though the Greek and Italic forms can alternatively be derived from <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂en-(e)h₂</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="36">de Vaan 2008: 36</bibl><bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="50–54">Dunkel 2014: 50–54</bibl>.</seg>
