The precise development in Germanic is disputed. Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="98, 223" ana="#omit-author">2017: 98, 223</bibl> reconstructs PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ánh₂t-</mentioned> &gt; Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anud-</mentioned>, interpreting the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*u</mentioned> as a possible reflex of the syllabic laryngeal, while Fulk <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="89" ana="#omit-author">2018: 89</bibl> is skeptical that the etymon even contained a syllable final laryngeal. Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="s.v. anad-, 26" ana="#omit-author">2013: s.v. anad-, 26</bibl>, on the other hand, reconstructs a PGmc root noun <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anaþ ~ *anadiz</mentioned>, deriving <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anad-</mentioned> from a remodeled pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂enh₂-et-</mentioned> with two generalized full-grades. He argues that there is no evidence for inherited <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anud-</mentioned>.  Hansen <bibl corresp="#hansen2017b" n="170–71" ana="#omit-author">2017b: 170–71</bibl> reconstructs <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂enH̥t(-i)- ~ *h₂n̥Ht(-i)-</mentioned> and notes that the Latin evidence points to an original root noun, but that a transition to an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-stem must have already happened in PIE.</seg>
