The <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰ-</mentioned> may represent the PIE root enlargement traditionally called the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">dʰ-</mentioned>determinative; in Germanic nouns derived from intransitive roots, Lehmann <bibl corresp="#lehmann1942" ana="#omit-author">1942</bibl> analyzes this enlargement as marking a state or result produced by a preceding action, which would permit <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂enh₁-dʰ-</mentioned> ‘that which results from breathing’ &gt; ‘breath’. A close morphological-semantic parallel is his analysis of Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_wedra"><ref target="#pgmc_wedra">*wedrą</ref></mentioned> as a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">dʰ</mentioned>-extension of PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2weh1"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2weh1">*h₂weh₁-</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#lehmann1942" n="128">Lehmann 1942: 128</bibl>. The identification of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-dʰ-</mentioned> as an enlargement is, however, uncertain, as no exact extra-Germanic counterpart confirms the exact enlarged stem.
