Germanic evidence is sparse: the verb is reconstructed mainly from Gothic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_got_uzon"><ref target="#cog_got_uzon">𐌿𐌶𐍉𐌽</ref></mentioned>. Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="274–75" ana="#omit-author">2017: 274–75</bibl> places <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ananą</mentioned> among the vowel-initial Strong class 6 verbs whose preterite singular developed a long vowel through contraction of the reduplicating and root syllables, which he reconstructs as trimoric <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ôn-</mentioned> specifically in the preterite indicative singular, beside ordinary <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ōn-</mentioned> in the remainder of the preterite paradigm. Fulk <bibl corresp="#fulk2018" n="259" ana="#omit-author">2018: 259</bibl>, following Mailhammer <bibl corresp="#mailhammer2007" n="89–103, especially 94–95" ana="#omit-author">2007: 89–103, especially 94–95</bibl> and Schumacher <bibl corresp="#schumacher2005" n="597–98" ana="#omit-author">2005: 597–98</bibl>, acknowledges the long vowel derived from reduplication of the initial laryngeal, but posits the length as a simple bimoric vowel in both singular and plural. The absence of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">**-nn-</mentioned> is noteworthy, since <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ananą</mentioned> provides a counterexample to the proposed Germanic development <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nH-</mentioned> &gt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nn-</mentioned>: inherited <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nh₁-</mentioned> instead gives simple <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-n-</mentioned> here <bibl corresp="#scheungraber2010" n="84–85">Scheungraber 2010: 84–85</bibl>. Cognate with Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_aniti"><ref target="#cog_san_aniti">अनिति</ref></mentioned> and Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_ana"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_ana">*ana-</ref></mentioned>, the latter probably showing the semantic development ‘breathe, exhale’ &gt; ‘rest, pause’ &gt; ‘remain’ <bibl corresp="#matasovic2009" n="s.v. *ana-">Matasović 2009a: s.v. *ana-</bibl> <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="267–68">Rix et al. 2001: 267–68</bibl>.
