<seg type="p">The suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-anaz </mentioned>most likely has two different historical origins that merged into one in Proto-Germanic. This strong verb past participle form developed from an earlier form, pre-Germanic<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *onó-s</mentioned>, from a remodeling of the Proto-Indo-European verbal adjective suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*nó-s</mentioned>. It appears as though the original <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-o-</mentioned> of the pre-Germanic suffix was secondary, not part of the inherited PIE form; Ringe believes that it may have been added analogically with the pre-Germanic infinitival suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*o-no-m</mentioned> > PGmc <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ana"><ref target="#pgmc_ana">*-aną</ref></mentioned>. However, it is still not completely clear why the remodeling occurred. In any case, the resulting form, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-anaz</mentioned>, became the productive past participle suffix for all strong verbs. One example of this formation can be seen in Sanskrit verbal adjectives in <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_na"><ref target="#cog_san_na">-न</ref></mentioned>, which preserve the original PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-nó-</mentioned> formation. The suffix<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *inaz </mentioned>< Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*enō-s</mentioned> was another variant of this past participle suffix. This variant is found in North and West Germanic. <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="188, 217–218">Ringe 2017: 188, 217–218</bibl>.</seg>

Generally speaking, when used denominally, <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stems were used to indicate 'someone associated with X'.
