Barðdal &amp; Eythórsson <bibl corresp="#barddal2020" n="212" ana="#omit-author">2020: 212</bibl> argue that the Germanic meaning ‘answer’ preceded ‘swear (an oath)’, the latter developing from ‘answer before a court of justice’. Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="s.v. *swar(j)an-" ana="#omit-author">2013: s.v. *swar(j)an-</bibl> reconstructs the noun as <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*swaro-</mentioned> but regards the deeper Indo-European etymology of the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*swar-</mentioned> family as uncertain. Rix and colleagues <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="613" ana="#omit-author">2001: 613</bibl> relate it to PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_swer"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_swer">*swer-</ref></mentioned>, with earlier Germanic ‘speak, sound’.
