Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="89" ana="#omit-author">2017: 89</bibl>  reconstructs an accent shift <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ánti</mentioned> → <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂antí </mentioned>in the prehistory of Germanic; Grimm’s Law then gave <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*t</mentioned> &gt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*þ</mentioned>, and the post-root accent triggered Verner’s Law <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*þ</mentioned> &gt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*d</mentioned>, yielding pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*andí</mentioned> &gt; Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*andi</mentioned>, neatly accounting for the otherwise unexpected medial <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-d-</mentioned>. The semantic path is less certain: an intermediate additive or mildly adversative sense ‘on the other side; in addition’ is preferable; Ringe reconstructs Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*andi</mentioned> as ‘in addition’ and assigns ordinary coordinating ‘and’ specifically to Proto-West Germanic, while Dunkel <bibl corresp="#dunkel2014" n="306–11" ana="#omit-author">2014: 306–11</bibl> questions the traditional derivation and allows much of the non-Anatolian material to continue an adverbial <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_an_ti_an_th2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_an_ti_an_th2">*án-ti ~ *án-th₂</ref></mentioned>  rather than the root noun <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ents"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ents">*h₂énts</ref></mentioned> itself.
