Kroonen reconstructs a Verner alternation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anþō- ~ *andō-</mentioned> on the basis of Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_onn_ond"><ref target="#cog_non_onn_ond">ǫnn ~ ǫnd</ref></mentioned>, deriving the alternation from the mobile accent of PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂énHt-h₂ ~ *h₂nHt-h₂-ós</mentioned>. The evidence is uncertain, however, since <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ǫnn</mentioned> appears to rest on a disputed interpretation of a single occurrence in <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Skírnismál</mentioned> 31, where it may instead be the unrelated noun ‘work, harvest season’ <bibl corresp="#jonsson1932" n="Skírnismǫ́l, v. 31">Jónsson 1932: Skírnismǫ́l, v. 31</bibl>. If so, only <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ǫnd</mentioned> securely continues this lexeme, and the reconstructed Verner alternation remains speculative.  Orel’s alternative comparison with the Proto-Indo-European root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ent"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2ent">*h₂ent-</ref></mentioned> is semantically attractive, but a direct derivation does not account as readily for the internal laryngeal or the Indo-Iranian, Italic, and Armenian evidence; any more remote relationship between the two formations remains uncertain <bibl corresp="#orel2003" n="18">Orel 2003: 18</bibl>.</seg>
