The oxytone accent accounts for Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-g-</mentioned> by Verner’s Law, while the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-yéh₂</mentioned> formation underlies the feminine Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*jō</mentioned>-stem, a subset of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ō-</mentioned>stems. Compare Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ankos"><ref target="#cog_grc_ankos">ἄγκος</ref></mentioned> and Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_ankas"><ref target="#cog_san_ankas">अङ्कस्</ref></mentioned>, both belonging to the same PIE root family; <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned> itself is securely reconstructed with the meaning ‘curve, bend’ <bibl corresp="#monier_williams1899" n="7">Monier-Williams 1899: 7</bibl> <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="268">Rix et al. 2001: 268</bibl>. The semantic transition ‘curved or hollow ground’ → ‘valley, lowland’ → ‘meadow’ is strengthened by closely related Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_angraz_1"><ref target="#pgmc_angraz_1">*angraz¹</ref></mentioned> &lt; <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂enk-ró-s</mentioned> and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ancrae"><ref target="#cog_lat_ancrae">ancrae</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="28">Kroonen 2013: 28</bibl>. Still, the deeper connection is not beyond doubt: Kluge <bibl corresp="#kluge1899" n="s.v. Anger">Kluge 1899: s.v. Anger</bibl> regards the further origin of the Germanic meadow words as obscure and only tentatively connects them with the notion ‘curved surface’. Recent evidence is especially interesting: Aikio <bibl corresp="#aikio2025" n="slide 18, “PNo *ngj &gt; Saami *vć”" ana="#omit-author">2025: slide 18, “PNo *ngj &gt; Saami *vć”</bibl> reconstructs Proto-Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_gmq-x-proto_angjo"><ref target="#cog_gmq-x-proto_angjo">*angjō-</ref></mentioned> (&gt; Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_eng"><ref target="#cog_non_eng">eng</ref></mentioned>) as the source of Proto-Saami <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_avco"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_avco">*āvćō</ref></mentioned>, independently confirming an old Germanic formation with <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-j-</mentioned>, though not its ultimate PIE derivation.</seg>
