The formation was probably originally adjectival, ‘bent, curved’, and was substantivized in Germanic as ‘hook’ <bibl corresp="#erhard2022" n="107–109">Erhard 2022: 107–109</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="28">Kroonen 2013: 28</bibl> <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="124">Ringe 2017: 124</bibl>. The exact cognate is Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ankulos"><ref target="#cog_grc_ankulos">ἀγκύλος</ref></mentioned>, while Avestan <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ave_anku"><ref target="#cog_ave_anku">𐬀𐬥𐬐𐬎</ref></mentioned> and Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_ankusa"><ref target="#cog_san_ankusa">अङ्कुश</ref></mentioned> belong to related formations from the same root <bibl corresp="#krahe1969" n="85">Krahe &amp; Meid 1969: 85</bibl>. The accentuation provides unusually good confirmation of the reconstruction: Ringe contrasts root-accented pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂ánkulah₂</mentioned> &gt; Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_anhulo"><ref target="#pgmc_anhulo">*anhulō</ref></mentioned> with suffix-accented pre-Germanic<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *h₂ankulós </mentioned>&gt; PGmc <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*angulaz</mentioned>, in which Verner’s Law voices the reflex of *k to *g; the accent of Greek ἀγκύλος independently supports the latter accentuation through Wheeler’s Law <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="124">Ringe 2017: 124</bibl>.
The older analysis of<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *angulaz</mentioned> as a Proto-Germanic diminutive of <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ango_1"><ref target="#pgmc_ango_1">*angô¹</ref></mentioned> is therefore unnecessary: <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*angulaz</mentioned> and <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ango_1"><ref target="#pgmc_ango_1">*angô¹</ref></mentioned> are better regarded as separate inherited derivatives of <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned>. The sense ‘prickle, sting’ appears instead to have belonged originally to the related <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ango_1"><ref target="#pgmc_ango_1">*angô¹</ref></mentioned> and to have spread secondarily to descendants of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*angulaz</mentioned> in West Germanic from about the eleventh century onward <bibl corresp="#erhard2022" n="107–09">Erhard 2022: 107–09</bibl>.</seg>
