            <seg type="p">Dardano <bibl corresp="#dardano2020" n="41–49" ana="#omit-author">2020: 41–49</bibl> lends further support to this interpretation by analyzing Hittite <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan"><ref target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan">𒄭𒅔𒃷</ref></mentioned> as a deverbal abstract noun derived from, with the semantic development ‘that which is allotted’ → ‘allotted portion, lot’ → ‘fate’ → ‘ill fate, death’ → ‘plague’. Following García Ramón, she favors treating PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2">*h₂enḱ-</ref></mentioned> as a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Schwebeablaut</mentioned> variant of <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2nek"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2nek">*h₂neḱ-</ref></mentioned>, while distinguishing this root from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned>. Old Irish <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_sga_echt"><ref target="#cog_sga_echt">écht</ref></mentioned> &lt; Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_anxtu"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_anxtu">*anxtu</ref></mentioned> is probably related, although its deeper analysis remains disputed: Matasović  <bibl corresp="#matasovic2009" n="37, s.v. anku-" ana="#omit-author">2009: 37, s.v. anku-</bibl> derives it from PIE <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">n̥ḱ-tu-</mentioned> beside <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_neku"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_neku">*neku-</ref></mentioned>, whereas Irslinger <bibl corresp="#irslinger2002" n="96–98" ana="#omit-author">2002: 96–98</bibl> observes that zero grade is unexpected in this type of <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-tu-</mentioned> noun and instead favors derivation from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2">*h₂enḱ-</ref></mentioned>, supported semantically by Hittite <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_hi_in_ka_hink"><ref target="#cog_hit_hi_in_ka_hink">𒄭𒅔𒅗</ref></mentioned> and its derivative <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan"><ref target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan">𒄭𒅔𒃷</ref></mentioned>, which demonstrates the development ‘allotted portion, lot’ → ‘fate’ → ‘death’.</seg>
            <seg type="p">If Irslinger’s analysis is correct, Germanic and Celtic preserve parallel inherited dental formations, and no borrowing need be assumed. The alternative derivation from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned> is much less likely, since LIV explicitly distinguishes that root from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2">*h₂enḱ-</ref></mentioned> and the former offers no convincing semantic route to ‘outlawry, persecution’ <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="268, s.v. *h₂enk-">Rix et al. 2001: 268, s.v. *h₂enk-</bibl>. Orel’s <bibl corresp="#orel2003" n="20, s.v. *anxtō" ana="#omit-author">2003: 20, s.v. *anxtō</bibl> association with the Germanic ‘narrow, constricted’ family and thus ultimately with <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2engh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2engh">*h₂enǵʰ-</ref></mentioned> remains phonologically possible, but the direct convergence of Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*anhtō</mentioned>, Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_anxtu"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_anxtu">*anxtu</ref></mentioned>, and Hittite <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan"><ref target="#cog_hit_hi_in_kan_he_inkan">𒄭𒅔𒃷</ref></mentioned> around ‘fate, death, slaughter, outlawry’ makes the <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk_x2">*h₂enḱ-</ref></mentioned> analysis appreciably stronger.</seg>
