Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_ankulos"><ref target="#cog_grc_ankulos">ἀγκύλος</ref></mentioned> is not an exact cognate: it reflects the related voiceless-root formation <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂enkulós</mentioned> from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned>, which regularly yielded Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_angulaz"><ref target="#pgmc_angulaz">*angulaz</ref></mentioned> through Grimm's and Verner's laws <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="123–24">Ringe 2017: 123–24</bibl>.  The voiced root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eng"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2eng">*h₂eng-</ref></mentioned> may itself have arisen from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2enk">*h₂enk-</ref></mentioned> by assimilation of the stop to the preceding nasal, though the relationship between the two variants remains uncertain <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="42–43">de Vaan 2008: 42–43</bibl>.</seg>
