Kroonen regards proposed connections with <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_amsaz"><ref target="#pgmc_amsaz">*amsaz</ref></mentioned>, Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_onus"><ref target="#cog_lat_onus">onus</ref></mentioned>, and Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_asser"><ref target="#cog_lat_asser">asser</ref></mentioned> as problematic. Neri <bibl corresp="#neri2009" n="9" ana="#omit-author">2009: 9</bibl> proposes instead Proto-Indo-European<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> </mentioned><mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1onh3_s_o"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1onh3_s_o">h₁onh₃-s-o-</ref></mentioned>, comparing Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_onus"><ref target="#cog_lat_onus">onus</ref></mentioned>, Sanskrit <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_san_anas"><ref target="#cog_san_anas">अनस्</ref></mentioned>, and Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_onos"><ref target="#cog_grc_onos">ὄνος</ref></mentioned>, but Ringe <bibl corresp="#ringe2017" n="302" ana="#omit-author">2017: 302</bibl> still regards the etymology as obscure. Neri’s derivation should remain tentative, particularly since Beekes <bibl corresp="#beekes2010" n="430, s.v. ἔνοσις" ana="#omit-author">2010: 430, s.v. ἔνοσις</bibl> rejects the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁enh₃-</mentioned> root analysis on which this comparison was based. The formally tempting comparison with Latin<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> </mentioned><mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ansa"><ref target="#cog_lat_ansa">ānsa</ref></mentioned>, Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_henia"><ref target="#cog_grc_henia">ἡνία</ref></mentioned>, Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_asa"><ref target="#cog_lit_asa">ąsà</ref></mentioned>, and Old Prussian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_prg_ansis"><ref target="#cog_prg_ansis">ansis</ref></mentioned> is better kept with <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_ansijo"><ref target="#pgmc_ansijo">*ansijō</ref></mentioned>; this group is commonly traced to Proto-Indo-European <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2emseh2"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2emseh2">*h₂emseh₂</ref></mentioned>, from <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2em"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2em">*h₂em-</ref></mentioned>, but its connection to<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *ansaz</mentioned> remains uncertain <bibl corresp="#beekes2010" n="s.v. ἡνία">Beekes 2010: s.v. ἡνία</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="30">Kroonen 2013: 30</bibl> <bibl corresp="#de_vaan2008" n="44">de Vaan 2008: 44</bibl>.
