The immediate reconstruction is uncertain: Mees <bibl corresp="#mees2022b" n="10" ana="#omit-author">2022b: 10</bibl> gives <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*apaliją</mentioned>, while Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="31–32" ana="#omit-author">2013: 31–32</bibl> and Wodtko and colleagues <bibl corresp="#wodtko2008" n="262" ana="#omit-author">2008: 262</bibl> reconstruct <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*aplja-</mentioned> (cf. alternative <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*apliją</mentioned>); Cheung and Aydemir <bibl corresp="#cheung2015" n="84" ana="#omit-author">2015: 84</bibl> explain the <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ja</mentioned>-stem as originating in a former collective plural.
