The Germanic *<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-d-</mentioned> is from a generalization of the weak stem, where Verner’s Law came into effect due to the oxytone accent: <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₂r̥-téy-</mentioned> &gt; pre-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ard-</mentioned>. The Proto-Germanic stem class, however, is uncertain. The Germanic reflexes do not independently require an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-stem: Old English <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ang_eard"><ref target="#cog_ang_eard">eard</ref></mentioned> shows no diagnostic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-umlaut, and Old Norse <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_non_einardr"><ref target="#cog_non_einardr">einarðr</ref></mentioned> favors a thematic adjectival formation. Accordingly, Orel <bibl corresp="#orel2003" n="22–23" ana="#omit-author">2003: 22–23</bibl> reconstructs an <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">a</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ardaz</mentioned>, while Lloyd and Springer <bibl corresp="#lloyd1988" n="s.v. art" ana="#omit-author">1988: s.v. art</bibl> cautiously give only Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ard-</mentioned>. <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ardiz</mentioned> may therefore preserve the inherited <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ti-</mentioned>stem, but <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*ardaz</mentioned>, perhaps through Germanic thematic remodeling, is a serious alternative. Not to be confused with the better-supported agricultural <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">i</mentioned>-stem <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_arthiz"><ref target="#pgmc_arthiz">*arþiz</ref></mentioned>.</seg>
