Cognate with Lithuanian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_erzus"><ref target="#cog_lit_erzus">eržùs</ref></mentioned>, <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lit_arzus"><ref target="#cog_lit_arzus">aržùs</ref></mentioned> and Hittite <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_hit_ar_ka_ri_arkari"><ref target="#cog_hit_ar_ka_ri_arkari">𒀀𒅈𒅗𒊑</ref></mentioned>; Russian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ru_jorzat"><ref target="#cog_ru_jorzat">ёрзать</ref></mentioned> has also been compared but is less secure <bibl corresp="#frantikova2022" n="22–23">Frantíková 2022: 22–23</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="34">Kroonen 2013: 34</bibl>. Probably related to PIE <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1orghis_h3orghis"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h1orghis_h3orghis">*h₁órǵʰis ~ *h₃órǵʰis</ref></mentioned>, reflected by Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_orkhis"><ref target="#cog_grc_orkhis">ὄρχις</ref></mentioned> and Old Armenian <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_xcl_orjik"><ref target="#cog_xcl_orjik">որձիք</ref></mentioned>. The initial laryngeal is disputed:<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> *h₃-</mentioned> is favored by Kloekhorst <bibl corresp="#kloekhorst2008" n="203" ana="#omit-author">2008: 203</bibl> and Kroonen <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="34" ana="#omit-author">2013: 34</bibl>, while LIV² <bibl corresp="#rix2001" n="238–39">Rix et al. 2001: 238–39</bibl> and Frantíková <bibl corresp="#frantikova2022" n="22–23, 228">Frantíková 2022: 22–23, 228</bibl> reconstruct <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*h₁-</mentioned>. Alternatively, Santoro <bibl corresp="#santoro2002" n="59–63" ana="#omit-author">2002: 59–63</bibl> derives the Germanic adjective from a root meaning ‘shake, tremble’, with ‘cowardly’ as the primary sense.</seg>
