The word is usually connected with the Proto-Indo-European root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2er"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_h2er">*h₂er-</ref></mentioned>, though the relationship is formally uncertain, since the Indo-Iranian and Baltic forms require an additional laryngeal in the nominal stem.
