The worid is a feminine root noun whose irregular correspondences with Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_ervum"><ref target="#cog_lat_ervum">ervum</ref></mentioned>, Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_orobos"><ref target="#cog_grc_orobos">ὄροβος</ref></mentioned>, and especially Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_erebinthos"><ref target="#cog_grc_erebinthos">ἐρέβινθος</ref></mentioned> favor parallel adaptation of a non-Indo-European crop name rather than inheritance from Proto-Indo-European. Proto-Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-īt-</mentioned> has been compared with pre-Greek <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">-ινθ-</mentioned> and analyzed as a reflex of a substrate suffix <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*-ṼD- ~ *-VⁿD-</mentioned>; the divergent vocalism and<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto"> w ~ b</mentioned> correspondence provide further support for borrowing <bibl corresp="#kroonen2012b" n="242–44">Kroonen 2012b: 242–44</bibl> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="37">Kroonen 2013: 37</bibl> <bibl corresp="#sorgo2020" n="434, 457–61">Šorgo 2020: 434, 457–61</bibl>.
