The ancient forms Latin <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_lat_asciburgium"><ref target="#cog_lat_asciburgium">Asciburgium</ref></mentioned> and Ancient Greek <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_grc_askibourgion"><ref target="#cog_grc_askibourgion">Ἀσκιβούργιον</ref></mentioned> indicate such a <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">ja</mentioned>-formation <bibl corresp="#scheungraber2014" n="78–79">Scheungraber &amp; Grünzweig 2014: 78–79</bibl>. The name is best interpreted ‘(place) at the ash hill/elevation’; ‘ash-fortress’ is possible if <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_burgz"><ref target="#pgmc_burgz">*burgz</ref></mentioned> had already developed ‘height’ &gt; ‘fortified height’ &gt; ‘fortification’, but the homonymous Ptolemaic mountain name favors the older topographic sense <bibl corresp="#scheungraber2014" n="79–80">Scheungraber &amp; Grünzweig 2014: 79–80</bibl>. The first constituent belongs to <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_askaz"><ref target="#pgmc_askaz">*askaz</ref></mentioned> <bibl corresp="#kroonen2013" n="38">Kroonen 2013: 38</bibl>; older scholarship reconstructs Germanic <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">*askiz</mentioned>, which would more directly account for the transmitted <mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Asci-</mentioned>/<mentioned xml:lang="gmw-x-proto">Aski-</mentioned> <bibl corresp="#pokorny1959" n="782, s.v. *ōs, ōs-i-s, ō̆s-en-, os-k-">Pokorny 1959: 782, s.v. *ōs, ōs-i-s, ō̆s-en-, os-k-</bibl>. The second constituent <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#pgmc_burgz"><ref target="#pgmc_burgz">*burgz</ref></mentioned>  continues an inherited zero-grade formation from Proto-Indo-European root <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_ine-x-proto_bhergh"><ref target="#cog_ine-x-proto_bhergh">*bʰergʰ-</ref></mentioned>, with close Proto-Celtic <mentioned xml:lang="" target="#cog_cel-x-proto_brig"><ref target="#cog_cel-x-proto_brig">brig-</ref></mentioned>; the development toward ‘fortified place, town’ is shared especially by Germanic and Continental Celtic <bibl corresp="#van_sluis2023" n="199, 224">van Sluis et al. 2023: 199, 224</bibl>.</seg>
